Story Blog Update

Remember that story blog thing I mentioned a little while back? Well, setting up is nearly complete, and it shouldn't be long before the first story can begin. (Mostly, that's barring any remaining major techinical difficulties.)

It will show up as "Chronicles," and will feature stories which take place in the world of Astraea, mostly aside from the role play. Chronicles characters will occasionally make appearances in the RP, and the results will be posted along with the rest of their stories afterward and may involve rewriting of the participants posts (only words; events given will not be changed, even if it results in a Chronicles charater's death, and participants will be given credit). These characters are as much a part of the world as any others, and are subject to the same continuity.

There will likely be multiple characters with multiple stories going as things progress, but for the first, I'd like some input from all of you. What sort of character would you like to see get a dedicated story?

There's no telling where the tale might go!

System Update

So I lied. It's been bothering me how many bots keep getting in, so I'm going to try to get the Anti-Bot question (or some other better measure) working again.

I'll be doing another system update for it, and this time will allow it to overwrite the modifications I've installed rather than trying (and failing) to preserve them. It's just a matter of finding usable mods to install afterward then.

During the update, the forums will be temporarily down. It's possible (but unlikely) that there may be some loss of information in them; as a just in case, you might want to save anything important you've posted somewhere.

The update will not be happening today (Jan 5), but in the very near future.

No System Updates For Now

While the world will continue to grow, it may be awhile before the site itself gets an update. This is partly due to the troubles updating last time, which has still left a little bit broken (fortunately, there doesn't seem to be any major problems). Another reason for the hold off is restraints made by time and knowledge.

The time issue: I will be moving in a couple weeks, and so I have to focus on packing for now. On arrival, I'll have to unpack and find a new job (not to mention get internet set up again quick as we can), so I can continue to support both myself and this site.

The knowledge issue: I presently have a very limited understanding of coding, and pretty much all I know is restricted to HTML and CSS. Umbrascitor knows just enough of PHP to make minor alterations to something until it works - his thing is mostly Flash (which I intend to incorporate into this site in the future). This makes it difficult for us to know what changes we need to make so things keep working right after updates, and near-impossible to get things set up the way I'd like them to be (since that would involve some healthy hacking into our copy of phpBB).

But! Umbrascitor and I will both be headed back to school within a year, which, while it'll mess with time that much more, will allow us to get a better handle on how this all works, and thus a better understanding of the forum coding as well. And with any luck, to make up for where we fall short, we might eventually be able to get a real code monkey helping us out.

Just you watch, this place'll become awesome.

Board Updated

After putting it off for a little, I finally updated to the latest version of phpBB. All members should have received an email about some difficulty with that, but I hope everything's running at least as smoothly as it was previously (it should be running better than before). I can't be sure how well everything went through, because I and to do a bit of a work around and half the update wasn't done either of the ways it was supposed to work (because neither would work, for some reason).

If you run into any bugs, errors, or other weirdness, please let me know and I'll see if I can get it fixed up.

New Group Required For the Main RP

Since there seemed to be some confusion about how to join into the main role play (specifically, people posting without approved characters), a new member group has been created to separate out those who have approved characters and those who don't. Regular "Registered Users" will no longer be able to post in the main RP boards, though the OOC and Otherworld boards will remain open to them.

Now, when a person's character is approved, the person will be put into the "Full Member" group which will allow them to post in places such as Nova Terra, Telmar Forest, Dolora, and others.

Posts made by those without approved characters have been deleted.
